Janet Lavender

“The Boss”

Born in the San Fernando Valley, Janet’s journey into education and mentorship began early. She pursued her undergraduate degree in Business and Personal Development at Cal State Long Beach, where she developed a deep understanding of human behavior, and the challenges young people face. Inspired to make a difference, she Founded a nonprofit called Dress for Success Los Angeles in 1997where she helped move thousands of disadvantaged Men and Women move from Welfare to Work.
As she helped move Adults from Jobs to Careers. She quickly realized the disparities in resources and support available to high school and college students from different backgrounds. Determined to bridge this gap, she developed a program that would provide comprehensive support to students, helping them navigate the complexities of college admissions and career planning. In 2010, she founded Well Suited College and Career Program and wrote an Online Comprehensive College and Career Planning Curriculum on Canvas Network called Youth with a Passion.
Under Janet’s leadership, Well Suited has grown into a highly respected organization known for its innovative College and Career Planning Peer-to-Peer Approach that supports both High School and College students. The program offers personalized coaching, scholarship planning workshops, and resources on topics ranging from college application essays to interview techniques. By partnering with UC Universities and CSU colleges Well Suited reaches a diverse group of students, including those from underserved communities.
Janet’s approach emphasizes holistic development, focusing not only on academic achievement but also on College to Career strategies, personal growth and resilience. Her commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment has been instrumental in the program’s success. She believes in the power of mentorship and works tirelessly to match both high school and college students with mentors who can provide guidance and inspiration.
In addition to her work with Well Suited, Janet is an active advocate for educational equity and social justice. She frequently speaks at conferences and seminars, sharing her insights on effective mentorship, college readiness, and career development. Janet also works with the City of Los Angeles Economic Workforce Development Youth Employment Agency for the purpose of matching our college and high school students with employers from various industries that offer Internships that match their career interest.
Janet Lavender’s dedication to supporting young people and her innovative approach to education/careers have made a profound impact on countless lives. Her vision and leadership continue to inspire and pave the way for a brighter future for students from all walks of life.
